Friends of Valley Gardens

Welcome to Friends of Valley Gardens....

The Friends of Valley Gardens is a charity fundraising committee run by parents, extended family and friends of pupils at Valley Gardens Middle School. All parents and/or guardians automatically become members when their child joins the school however you can be as active a member as you wish.

What do we do?
As a group we meet once a term, with a member of staff present for 1 1/2 hours to discuss fund raising ideas to support the pupils experience in the school. We run a number of events every year that are successfully supported by parents, pupils, teaching staff and support staff. Most events are designed for pupils but there are larger events where parents are invited into the school too.

We allocate funds by committee, reviewing and discussing suggestions from the School Council and members of staff.

What events have we held this year?
In the autumn term we held a disco for years 5 and 6 to support pupils make new friends and reacquaint themselves with older school friends. Our Christmas Fair brought families back into the school and helped Christmas shopping get underway. We invited small local businesses and entrepreneurs to sell products whilst the school choir and musicians entertained shoppers and activities around the school gave parents the chance to browse.

In the spring term we did a lot of preparation for the summer term activities. Recently we offered the uniform ‘one stop shop’ for new families joining the school, provided refreshments at school events including the school Sports Days and organised the much-anticipated ‘Year 8 Prom’. The prom was held in The Village Hotel, Silverlink and was supported by the FOVG and teaching staff. It was a great night!

Where has money raised been spent recently?
Funds raised over the last two years have bought new sewing machines, team strips, music stands, playground seating, games and bicycle storage in association with national ‘Bikeability’ programme. We are currently reviewing plans for a ‘hang out’ space for Year 8 pupils in association with Northumbria University, Built Environment Undergraduates and mobile electronic devices to support portable teaching and the school IT provision.

How can you help?
The success of the Friends of Valley Gardens depends entirely on the support of parents, pupils, staff and the school community. We greatly appreciate any assistance. This can be anything from coming along and supporting events with friends and family or by joining the ‘FOVG’ committee.

Donations play an important role in fund raising efforts for raffles, tombola’s and prize giving’s at events for pupils. We ask you to keep an eye out for postings in the news letters from school but also keep visiting this part of the website for information.

Do you work for or own a company that discards goods when they cannot be sold or would be prepared to negotiate a great price for items we can sell or put in lucky dips at events?

Do you work for or own a company that is able to offer match funding to funds raised at one of our events? We are very appreciative of either of these possibilities and ask you to contact the school office and leave your contact details or alternatively, please come along to one of our meetings.

If you do a lot of Internet shopping, there is the opportunity for you to silently donate by shopping through the ‘giving machine’ website, http://www.thegivingmachine.co.uk/. The website offers over 400 retailers from supermarkets to specialist clothing brands and electronic equipment who donate various amounts of the profit of your sale to charities you choose. We are listed as a charity to benefit from your purchases and have been quite successful over the last few years in raising funds.

Contact details:
If you wish to contact us prior to the 19th September please ring the school office on 0191 200 8792 and they will direct your query.
